Equality and Diversity
Equality Statement
At Treales C of E Primary School, all pupils and members of staff are given the opportunity to fulfil their potential. Everyone is treated fairly and with dignity, in line with the Equality Act 2010, with full regard for the protected characteristics of:
age
disability
gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
race
religion or belief
sex
sexual orientation
We believe that every pupil and member of staff should have equal opportunity to thrive, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances. Guided by our Christian Values of Community, Courage, Truth, Justice, Peace, and Love, we are committed to fostering a school community that celebrates diversity within a culture of respect, cooperation, and belonging.
We recognise that equality can only be achieved when the whole school community—pupils, staff, governors, and parents/carers—work together. Promoting equality creates a positive environment where everyone feels valued and supported.
All pupils are of equal worth and deserve access to the full life of the school, enabling them to learn, grow, and achieve their highest potential. Equality lies at the heart of good educational practice, and all staff are responsible for upholding this principle and ensuring discrimination has no place in our school.
The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone on the basis of protected characteristics. We are therefore committed to advancing equality of opportunity and ensuring that no child or adult is disadvantaged or treated unfairly.
Public Sector Equality Duty
As a school, we have due regard to the need to:
Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment, and victimisation
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
Foster good relations between different groups
In addition, we fulfil the two specific duties by:
Publishing information to show compliance with the Equality Duty
Publishing measurable Equality Objectives at least once every four years
Advancing Equality in Practice
Having due regard to equality means that we:
Remove or minimise disadvantages experienced by people with protected characteristics
Take steps to meet the different needs of individuals from protected groups
Encourage participation of people from protected groups in public life and school activities where their involvement is disproportionately low
We recognise that these duties reflect international human rights standards, including:
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
The Human Rights Act 1998
Equality Objectives
Our Equality Objectives are designed to improve the school experience for pupils and staff, ensuring fairness and inclusion in every aspect of school life. They are:
To promote a culture of respect and inclusion by embedding equality into all aspects of teaching, learning, and the wider curriculum.
To narrow gaps in attainment and progress for pupils from vulnerable or disadvantaged groups.
To improve accessibility of the physical environment, curriculum, and communication for pupils, staff, and families with disabilities.
To strengthen pupil voice by ensuring children from all backgrounds and abilities contribute meaningfully to school decision-making.
To foster positive relationships across differences by encouraging collaboration, mutual respect, and celebration of diversity through the school’s Christian values.
These objectives are reviewed regularly and aligned with our School Improvement Plan.
